6 Ways to Manage the Risk of Leaving Your 9-5

Hi Reader,

I talk with a lot of people who dream about leaving the 9-5.

They want more freedom, more control, and more meaning in their work.

But leaving a stable, well-paying job for the uncertainty of self-employment is scary. It took me four years of preparation to say goodbye to my employer for the last time.

Needless to say, it wasn't a decision I took lightly. As the sole breadwinner for a family of 5, my decision depended largely on one thing:

Risk reduction.

If I only had myself to worry about, it would be less risky because I wouldn't be dragging my wife and kids along with me.

Perhaps your situation is similar to mine, and you want your ducks in a row before you hand in that resignation letter. With that in mind, here are 6 ways to reduce your risk so that you can quit with confidence:

  1. Eliminate the waste from your budget. Some expenses may take care of themselves when you quit (your commute cost, daycare, etc.), but look for other expenses that have outlasted their usefulness. You're not trying to live a Spartan lifestyle, but you do want to eliminate costly waste.
  2. Build a financial safety net. I'd recommend 12 months' worth of expenses. Use your side hustle income to fund this before you leave your job. When calculating your costs, don't just count your household expenses (mortgage, groceries, utilities, etc.) but also your future business expenses (insurance, licensing, etc.).
  3. Don't leave until your side hustle income consistently matches your 9-5 income. Or, at the very least, make sure it will match or exceed it in the very near future. (My "breakthrough moment" was landing 5 freelancing clients at a financial conference, in the weeks before I quit my job).
  4. Take care of large one-time expenses before quitting. Like that new roof, a reliable vehicle, college costs, etc. Otherwise, your 12-month financial cushion could be only a few months if the expense were large enough.
  5. Find your tribe. Like colleagues, but better. Your tribe is in your corner and supports what you're doing in your side hustle. Building this support network in person is best, but you can also develop strong relationships online in masterminds, online communities, and other virtual spaces.
  6. Last but not least, don’t burn bridges when you leave your employer. Risk reduction isn't risk elimination. You never know!

Managing risk isn’t a side note in my coaching; it’s a core pillar. My goal is to help you build a path out of your 9–5 that feels exciting and financially responsible. If you’d like clarity on your own risk level and what it would take to quit with confidence, let’s talk!

Hi Reader, Here's a phrase I’ve been thinking about a lot lately: Don’t let planning get in the way of progress. It reminds me of when I was in high school. Anytime I had a big assignment or an exam to study for, I would suddenly decide my desk absolutely had to be cleaned first. Or my entire room. Not because it really mattered, but because it felt productive. I could tell myself I was “getting ready” to do the work, without actually doing the work. Starting a side hustle often triggers the...

Hi Reader, The New Year always feels like a clean slate, doesn’t it? A fresh 365 days to conquer. A brand-new 12 months to change your life. It makes sense that people want to set big goals and bold resolutions right now. But I’ll be honest with you… January is not my peak performance month. If you’re anything like me, coming into the New Year doesn’t feel like rocket-fuel energy. It feels… slow. Sluggish. A little foggy. You’ve just come through the holidays, a time where routines fall...

Hi Reader, If you're worried about trying to escape your 9-5 because you're late in your career, I'll make it really simple: Don't be. I left my 9-5 after more than two decades in my career. I was in my mid-40s, on my career ladder, with more rungs to climb. It took me four years to build and execute my exit plan, but I succeeded and left my 9-5 behind. I'm living proof that it's possible. But everywhere I go (in person and online), I hear people say it's too late for them to pivot. They tell...
