I gave up New Year's resolutions years ago...here's what I do instead

Happy New Year! 🥳

How are you feeling about 2025? Regardless of how the previous year has gone, I'm always excited about the New Year. It's like turning a page or working with a clean slate.

But there's one thing that I no longer do...New Year's resolutions.

In fact, I think January 1st is one of the worst times of the year to try and implement significant change, whether it's to your health and fitness, career, relationships, etc.

I don't know about you, but my energy level is probably at its lowest point near the end of December. I've unplugged from most of my work for at least a couple of weeks; my exercise routine falls off; I don't eat as well, thanks to holiday dinners and more snacks and desserts in the house.

I'm a mess! 😂 And that's okay because you have to allow yourself to let go occasionally.

But when January 1st hits, you can't flip a switch or do a 180°. At least, it doesn't work for the vast majority of people. I'm unsure of the statistics, but I believe nearly 80% of people abandon their New Year's resolutions within a few months.

So, here's what I do instead.

I make a few minor changes that don't require a high degree of motivation. This could be adjusting my environment, tweaking an existing routine to make it more effective, or starting a new book.

For example, here are some things I'm doing as we head into 2025:

1. I cleaned and reorganized my office. By the end of the year, my office was getting pretty cluttered. I had to sort through stacks of paper and get rid of various items I rarely use that were taking up space. I should have taken a "before" picture, but here is the "after."

In case you're wondering, I like to work in the dark. My wife thinks I'm crazy. : )

2. I'm rereading the book Atomic Habits, which I do every January. If you haven't read it before, I highly recommend it! It's been one of the most impactful books for my life and business.

3. I'm making a slight increase in my automated investment contributions.

4. I'm bumping my gym workouts from 3 to 4 per week.

5. I'm making tiny changes to my nutrition, which is very good overall.

6. I've deleted most social media apps from my phone. (I do this periodically throughout the year)

And that's it!

In case you're wondering, "no big goals for 2025?"

I've got many goals I want to achieve this year. In fact, Laura and I spent about 2 or 3 hours in a coffee shop the other day talking about our goals for 2025 — for our marriage, family, fitness, business, travel, etc. But those are things that we've already been working towards and revisit every few months.

What about you? Do you set big New Year's resolutions? Or are you like me and focus on tiny changes? What are your goals for 2025?

Hey everyone! I recently had the opportunity to share my solopreneurship story with Andy Hill on the Marriage, Kids, and Money podcast. The episode went live this week, and you can watch it on YouTube or listen to the podcast! If any of the following sounds familiar, you need to watch this interview! You feel completely stuck in your corporate job and can't find a way out. You like your job, but dream of living the "laptop lifestyle". You're struggling to come up with a good side hustle idea....

July 2016. The sun, almost directly overhead, was beating down hard. I could feel the sweat gathering on my forehead, and I hadn’t even hit the stage yet. My black button-down and dark jeans weren’t helping. My bandmates and I stood backstage — if you could call it that — it was a white tent tucked stage right. Security and staff buzzed around, focused on their tasks. At least we had cold water. After about 30 minutes, the signal came. The five of us climbed the stairs and stepped onto the...

Hey everyone! A quick thought for today... The dream isn't a business. Most people think they want a business, but what they actually want is a life. A life where they wake up excited. Where they choose how to spend their time. Where they work because they want to, not because they have to. A business is just a tool. The life is the goal. What are you designing — a business or a life? Best, Colin _________________________ 🚀 Ready to take action? Here’s how we can connect: → Join the...
